Residents in Thembokhwezi, Cape Town, found an illegal alcohol factory – and they reported it to police, who raided it.
A resident, who did not want to be named, said: “We noticed the house was always closed, and expensive cars came at night and early in the morning.”
On Friday, residents decided to investigate and search the house.
“We heard loud music, probably to cover the noise of the machine making illegal alcohol. They were making gin,” said the resident.
The residents called the police, leading to the discovery of many illegal boxes of alcohol, more than five drums of spirits, and new boxes of Gordon’s, Old Buck Gin, and Stratton.
From now on, anyone wanting to rent a house in Thembokhwezi must get a letter from their previous street chairperson or a Sanco structure to vouch for their character. The letter must be handed to a member of the local street committee.
“This is to avoid having suspicious people move in who might commit crimes,” the resident said.
Sinazo Ngqenda, a resident from Gugulethu, suggested other communities should follow Thembokhwezi’s example to help police close down illegal operations.
“If we all take action when we notice illegal activities, the police will have an easier job, and we’ll protect ourselves from problems caused by illegal alcohol,” Ngqenda said.
