Three Lesotho nationals accused in the Cleveland mass shooting are expected to apply for bail in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Molebili Mosia, Ramonne Tsibela and Zipho Metsing were arrested in connection with the deadly attack at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg.

The trio faces 13 counts of murder and 14 counts of attempted murder.

According to the State, the accused and others allegedly drove to the informal settlement and opened fire on residents.

Thirteen people were killed and 14 others were injured.

Victims identified suspects

The bail application comes exactly a month after Johannesburg residents woke up to news of the massacre.

The National Prosecuting Authority said investigators obtained statements from surviving victims while they were in hospital.

After being discharged, the victims accompanied police to the Maimai informal settlement in the Johannesburg CBD.

The victims allegedly identified the three accused there.

Police also allege that more than 100 rounds of live 9mm ammunition were found at the home of one of the accused.

Crackdown on crime continues

The bail hearing comes as police intensify operations linked to illegal mining and related criminal activity.

On Tuesday, a multidisciplinary operation was carried out at Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria.

Police arrested 217 suspects during the operation.

The suspects included illegal immigrants from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Officers also seized a 9mm pistol, two magazines, 118 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, illegal mining equipment, foodstuffs and alcohol.

More suspects due in court

Police said two suspects were also arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting illegal immigrants.

All the suspects arrested during the Westonaria operation are expected to appear in the Westonaria Court on Thursday.

The Cleveland mass shooting remains one of the most serious attacks reported in Johannesburg in recent weeks.

The case has also placed renewed attention on violent crime, illegal firearms and organised criminal activity in Gauteng.

The court is now expected to hear whether the three accused should be released on bail while the murder and attempted murder case continues.
