Lindokuhle Mbatha had a chance for the visitors in the tenth minute, but his shot lacked power and Hugo Marques saved easily.

Thami Mkhize’s header in the 17th minute hit the side -netting, but Darwin Gonzalez was not going to be denied a minute later as he turned and fired past Melusi Buthelezi to make it 1-0.

Marques was back in action in the 26th minute, saving at close range from Bathusi Aubaas, while Sphiwe Mahlangu should have done better on the half hour mark, but after rounding the keeper, shot wide.

Orebotse Mongae’s free-kick attempt in the 35th minute was straight at Marques, while Pogiso Sanoka’s header was off target six minutes later, and at half-time City remained 1-0 in front.

Taariq Fielies went close for City as the second half got underway, while Aubaas went narrowly close to equalising in the 55th minute, only to be denied by the upright, Mahlangu’s follow-up shot was straight at Marques.

Mbatha’s long range attempt in the 68th minute was always going off target.

City were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute after Craig Martin was brought down. Mdu Mdantsane stepped up and made no mistake, 2-0 to City.

Victory for City, who move into second-place, while Galaxy remain 14th.

Earlier in the day, Chippa United and Baroka drew 2-2. Riaan Hanamub had given Chippa the lead, but Dan Ndhlovu equalised for the visitors. With five minutes to go Vincent Kobola’s team completed the comeback when Decide Chauke scored to make it 2-1. But Chippa weren’t done and Thokozani Sekotlong hammered in the equaliser in stoppage time.

In the other afternoon kickoff, Marumo Gallants and Golden Arrows ended goalless, while the two matches that kicked off at 5pm also ended in draws, Stellenbosch and Maritzburg ended 1-1, while it ended goalless between AmaZulu and Sekhukhune United.
