City Suffer Heavy Defeat To Petro

Cape Town City will need a miracle in the second leg away after a heavy 3-0 loss to Angola’s Petro De Luanda at the DHL Stadium in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie in the CAF Champions League played on Saturday evening.

After an opening fifteen minutes of sizing each other up, the first shot at goal finally came from City, but Darwin Gonzalez’s shot from just inside the box was high and wide.

Petro’s first chance came not much later but Anderson Cruz’s 20th-minute effort took a deflection and went behind.

Chances were few in the first half, but Khanyisa Mayo went close in the 32nd, his curling effort from just outside the area, just going wide of Hugo Marques’ goal.

But it was Petro who would grab the lead in the 38th minute. Gleison Moreira received the ball just inside City’s half and dribbled his way into the box, and his final shot had the beating of Darren Keet.

Just before half-time Taariq Fielies had a chance from a corner, but his header went straight at Marques.

It got worse for City just two minutes into the second half, as Mpho Makola, having just come onto the pitch brought down Gilberto and a penalty was awarded. Captain Tiago Leal stepped up and made it 2-0 to last season’s semi-finalists.

Petro made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute, and it was the captain again, Tiago Leal able to tap into an open net with Keet caught out of position.

City were reduced to ten men in the 82nd minute, when Brice Ambina was shown a red card for an elbow to Pedro Miguel.

A late chance to make it four fell to Carlinho in the 86th minute, but he fired over Keet’s goal.

The two teams will meet again in the second leg in Luanda next week, with the winners of the tie progressing to the Group Stages, while the loser will advance to the final qualifying round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
