Cape Town City and Stellenbosch played to a 1-1 draw in the Cape Derby at the DHL Stadium on Saturday evening.
Stellenbosch gave a debut to new German defender Lasse Sobiech after the 31-year finally received his work permit, and it was a fast-paced start to the derby.
Antonio Van Wyk had a great chance for Stellies in the eighth minute but his shot struck the upright. A minute later the woodwork was hit on the other end, as Darwin Gonzalez’s shot hit the post and bounced clear.
The tall Sobiech had half-chances in the 11th and 15th minute, but his headers were off target.
Craig Martin was on target in the 25th minute, but shot straight at Sage Stephens, while Darren Keet saved comfortably from Van Wyk’s headed attempt four minutes later.
Jayden Adams forced a save from Keet in the 35th minute before a golden chance fell to Junior Mendieta on the follow-up, but he shot straight at Keet.
City grabbed the lead just before the break when Gonzales headed in from Brice Abina’s cross. 1-0 in the 42nd minute.
Keet was called into action in the second minute of the second half, as he got a hand to Nhlanhla Mgaga’s effort from the left, while Stephens was able to easily deal with Khanyisa Mayo’s header in the 51st minute.
The impressive Ambina had a chance in the 69th minute, but his well-struck shot was saved by Stephens. Stephens was back in the thick of things two minutes later to save from Taahir Goedeman’s header.
Stellies were level in the 73rd minute, as Junior Mendieta headed in from close range to make it 1-1.
Chances fell for Mayo and Goedeman as City looked to to regain their lead, but going into the final ten minutes it remained level.
Nathan Fasika shot wide in the 84th minute, while Rafiq De Goede forced Keet into a save in the 90th minute.
City were awarded a dangerous free kick in stoppage time, and substitute Jordan Bender stepped up to take it but shot over.
But when the final whistle blew it remained level and for the first time the Cape derby ended in a draw.
