Cape Town City picked up their first DStv Premiership win of the season as they beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.

It was the home team who showed the early initiative, and City were in front in the fifth minute, Thami Mkhize setting up Darwin Gonzalez, who scored his third of the season from an acute angle.

Khama Billiat was on target in the 12th minute, but Darren Keet made a comfortable save, while Taariq Fielies went narrowly close a minute later, his header only just wide.

Keagan Dolly’s 15th-minute effort from long rage was high and wide, while five minutes later Taahir Goedeman went on a good run after a defensive lapse, but his final shot was wayward. A minute later Goedeman struck the woodwork with a low cross-cum-shot.

Brandon Petersen had to save from Gonzalez in the 25th minute, while a minute later the ball Wayde Lekay’s header was cleared off the line by Njabulo Ngcobo before Khanyisa Mayo went wide. Lekay went close in the 31st minute, but after spinning to shoot, his attempt went over.

At halftime, while it could have been by a larger margin, City led by 1-0

Keet pulled off a top save in the 49th minute to deny Kgaogelo Sekgota’s long-range effort.

But City were 2-0 up in the 62nd minute, Nathan Fasika heading in in style from Mayo’s set piece.

Dolly shot wide in the 65th minute, while Goedeman was off target for City three minutes later. Dolly went close again in the 70th minute, as he tried to follow up after a Keet save, but while his shot was heading to goal, Fasika was on the line to clear away.

Zitha Kwinika blasted over in the 76th minute, as time was running out for Chiefs to get back into the game.

In the end, City were comfortable winners, as the match ended 2-0, City picking up their first three points of the season, and Eric Tinkler’s tenth win as a coach against Chiefs.
