- Two City Power contractors were kidnapped and robbed by armed suspects in Alexandra while working on electricity infrastructure.
- The attackers hijacked a vehicle and stole equipment, but no injuries were reported.
- City Power condemned the incident and said it is working with police while expanding efforts to secure infrastructure.
Two contractors working for City Power were kidnapped in Alexandra on Friday, 10 April 2026.
The contractors had been appointed to assist in securing critical electricity infrastructure and were on site when five suspects, travelling in a white Toyota Avanza without registration plates, approached them.
The suspects, armed with firearms, confronted the team and pointed guns at the driver before taking possession of the vehicle keys and fleeing the scene.
They also hijacked the contractors’ white Nissan NP200 bakkie, which contained tools and equipment, including a generator, paint, welding rods and personal belongings.
Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the incident.
City Power has condemned the attack, saying such incidents not only endanger workers’ lives but also undermine efforts to protect essential infrastructure and ensure a reliable electricity supply.
“The matter has been reported to the South African Police Service, and City Power is working closely with law enforcement authorities as investigations continue. City Power strongly condemns this criminal act,” said spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
The utility added that theft and vandalism remain major challenges.
In response, it has launched a programme to secure mini substations and other key infrastructure, which began in Roodepoort last year and is now being expanded across all eight Service Delivery Centre areas, particularly in identified hotspots.
