City Part Ways With Lekay

Cape Town City have parted ways with former TS Galaxy striker Wayde Lekay after he had fallen down the pecking order under Eric Tinkler.

The 25-year-old joined City at the beginning of the season on a free transfer after leaving Galaxy.

Before joining City he had also spent a few weeks at Kaizer Chiefs and was also on trial at Royal AM but both sides opted against signing him.

iDiski Times has now learned that Lekay parted ways with Cape Town City a week ago after a lack of game-time.

The former Steenberg Unitedforward made 16 appearances in all competitions for the Citizens, including three CAF Champions League appearances and two in the CAF Confederations Cup.

However, Lekay scored only once for the Citizens and assisted on one occasion in the MTN8 against AmaZulu FC. But since the restart after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the striker didn’t feature at all.

Lekay’s departure doesn’t come much as a shock, especially after Cape Town City signed Colombian international Juan Zapata and Cameroonian international Bertrand Mani in January.

Eric Tinkler had also previously explained that they had beefed up the squad to cope with the added games in the CAF inter-club competitions, but after they got eliminated they had started towards cutting down a few players, which also led to the release of Mpho Makola.
