The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has accused the City of Joburg (COJ) for pushing a racist agenda in its employment equity move.

Last week, Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse confirmed that over 120 employees’ contracts were terminated for being irregular.

The mayor said the move from fixed-term to permanent was made without following the correct recruitment process and that the employees will have to reapply for their positions.

Samwu Regional Chairperson, Esther Matatyana, said the employment of these employees were authorized through the correct channels.

“The contracts were sanctioned by the entire mayoral committee. What the DA is doing with this move, is that they are targeting black people. White people who also had their contracts upgraded to permanent are still employed. It’s only the black people whose contracts were ended,” Matatyana said.

Earlier this week the COJ advertised all 120 positions with an employment equity clause that specifies racial preference for each post.

One of the vacancy’s stipulated that preference would be given to Indian/White males or Indian/White females, COJ interns, including people with disabilities.

Over 120 employees were handed termination letters and given a 6-month severance package. Their contracts ends on 1 April 2022 with the recruitment process for all positions starting from 1 May.

Closing date for applications is on 23 March.
