Cape Town City exited the CAF Champions League losing 4-0 on aggregate, after a 1-0 defeat to Petro De Luanda in the second leg of their second preliminary round CAF Champions League game at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Friday evening.

City lost the first leg 3-0 last Saturday at the DHL Stadium.

While in the first tie, it was an even start, this time Petro looked to take control early. Darren was tested in the 8th minute, as there was an attempt to catch him off his line, but the City keeper was alert to the danger.

Petro began to take control and Pedro Pinto missed a guilt-edged chance in the tenth minute, Nathan Fasika put in a fantastic sliding tackle attempt to deny Gilberto a clear chance two minutes later.

Anderson shot wide in the 21st minute as the home team continued to look the more likely side to score, with City yet to test their former goalkeeper Hugo Marques.

Keet got down well to save from Soares in the 25th minute, and had to make a fantastic save to deny Tiago Azulao on the half hour mark.

Finally City had a chance in the 35th minute, but Mpho Makola’s free-kick attempt went just wide of the goal.

A minute later Kajally Drammeh got the first shot on target, but Marques got down to make the save.

Taariq Fielies was City’s hero in the 41st minute as he cleared off the line to deny Tiago Azulao the opener, and at the break, it remained goalless.

Keet made another terrific save in the 56th minute, palming away Gilberto’s powerful effort.

City thought they had a penalty in the 75th minute call, after substitute Khanyisa Mayo’s header looked to strike a defender’s arm, but the referee wasn’t interested.

City were awarded a dangerous free kick in the 83rd minute, but Makola couldn’t keep it down and it flew over Marques goal. A minute later some last-gasp defending at the other end denied Petro.

And just when it looked to be ending goalless, Petro sub Cabibi pounced on a poor clearance from Keet, dribbled into the box, sent the defenders the wrong way, and fired home to make it 1-0 in the 88th minute.

It could have been by more, as there was a late penalty call against Fielies, but the referee wasn’t interested. At full time it ended 1-0 to Petro, who advance 4-0 on aggregate and last year semi-finalists are into the Group Stages.

City will now head to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will enter at the additional second preliminary round, with the draw set to take place on Tuesday the 18th of October.
