English champions Manchester City started the new season with silverware as they beat Manchester United 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.
It would be back-to-back Manchester derby day finals at Wembley, with City avoiding consecutive final defeats to their rivals after losing 2-1 in the FA Cup back in May.
Following his goal in that last meeting, Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score the opener yet again. This time, it came with less than 10 minutes to play, and looked to be a certain winner.
Bernardo Silva had other plans though, as he latched onto a stunning Oscar Bobb cross to equalise in the last minute of the 90.
The game was evenly contested with 19-year-old Nico O’Reilly coming closest for City when he hit the woodwork early on.
Marcus Rashford would hit the post for United as well, but it would end all square with the lottery of a penalty shootout left to decide the winners.
Silva missed his penalty first to give the Red Devils the advantage. Seeking redemption after his Wembley miss at the Euro 2020 final, Jadon Sancho was denied too — sending the kicks to sudden death.
Johnny Evans’ off target attempt would be the moment of scrutiny before Manuel Akanji stepped up to score the winner, ensuring Pep Guardiola’s side avoided a fourth Community Shield defeat in a row.
