Members of the Assemblies of God Church in New Brighton township, Gqeberha, kept praying during a robbery at their weekly revival service on Monday evening.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said four armed men stormed into the church around 7.20pm.
“While the congregation was praying, four armed men entered the church and fired a shot in the air. They robbed the congregants of their personal belongings, including four cellphones, one laptop, and an undisclosed amount of cash, before fleeing,” Mawisa said.
A video shared on social media showed church members lying face down while the robbers searched them for valuables.
A church member, who did not want to be named, said the robbery did not shake their faith.
“The pastor was finishing his sermon when we heard a gunshot. Four men entered, one with a silver gun. They started taking our belongings, going row by row. We all started praying, which seemed to make them panic,” the member told Scrolla.Africa.
Some members tried to follow the robbers to see their getaway vehicle, but one of the gunmen fired a second shot, ordering them back inside.
Bishop Sandile Mazantsi said the weekly revival services would continue.
“We will continue worshipping and serving the Lord. This is all the more reason to keep praying for our communities,” he said.
