The bus’s passengers were returning to Cape Town following a five-day stay at the Carmel Coastal Retreat near George.

The bus apparently overturned when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

According to preliminary accounts, five people died and 48 were injured.

The bus’s passengers were parishioners from numerous churches, including St. Aidan’s, St. Saviour’s, and St. Matthew’s.

Liezel Christiansen, Maureen Viret, Amy Roberts, and Beatrice Maaneveldt were among those killed.

The fifth victim had not been identified as of the time of publication.

The group activities were announced on the Facebook page of St. Aidan’s Lansdowne. In the previous post, the seniors were eating breakfast before heading off.

The post was captioned, “Breakfast before hitting the road home. Praying for safe travelling mercies”, and was accompanied by pictures of the parishioners.
