Kaizer Chiefs have failed to go top of the DStv Premiership table for the first time this season following their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.
Amakhosi’s first-half lead went down the drain as Chippa pulled an epic comeback, leaving Chiefs fans heartbroken.
The showpiece started at a slow pace as both sides struggled to find any real momentum.
However, when the first half progressed, the showdown swung back to life, with Arthur Zwane’s charges searching for an opener.
The Soweto giants’ prayers were finally answered in the 44th minute when they broke the deadlock through Siyabonga Ngezana.
The match went into the half-time break with Chiefs leading by 1-0. The second stanza was action-packed, with the Chilli Boys trying to pull one back.
But, chances were few and far between for the Gqeberha-based outfit. Unfazed, Chiefs upped the tempo, forcing the visitors’ backline into errors with the hope of adding to the scoreline.
As the half wore on, the Glamour Boys started enjoying their most delicate spell of the contest.
Despite a dominant display with plenty of chances, the hosts could not find a breakthrough against the resilient Chippa side.
Things took a U-turn in the 54th minute when Siphelele Luthuli found the equaliser for Chippa.
Amakhosi were now being pushed back and couldn’t create an opportunity of note after the Chilli Boys levelled matters.
After the equaliser, Chippa looked happy to knock the ball around to keep the game flowing.
On the other hand, Chiefs offered little threat in front of the Chilli Boys’ goals.
In the game’s dying minutes, Pfumbidzai scored a winner for the visitors, who walked away with all three valuable points.
As things stand, Chiefs are placed fourth on the table with 17 points after 11 games, whereas Chippa find themselves in seventh position with 14 points from 10 outings.
In the end, however, this was another game to add to the list of meetings that Chiefs gave away after taking the lead.
