Chiefs – We’re Not Contemplating Changing Coaches

Kaizer Chiefs communications manager Vina Maphosa has responded to rumours that the club could look to sack head coach Arthur Zwane, insisting the Amakhosi leadership are “not even contemplating” a change of coaches.

Zwane is experiencing a bumpy debut season as head coach of the club, with results turning sour of late after the club lost four out of their last five games.

As a consequence, last hopes of silverware were dashed, meaning the club’s trophy drought will continue to over eight years.

On the weekend, Chiefs lost their 11th game of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership, a new negative record for the club in the PSL era.

With their 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United also ending last hopes of qualifying for a CAF inter-club competition, disgruntled fans threw objects in the direction of the players and the coach, who got hurt in the process, after the match.

On Monday, a report by SABC Sport stated the leadership’s backing of Zwane “is shaky” and that the club will “actively look” for potential replacements, while many supporters have also seemingly lost faith in 10111.

But Maphosa dismissed the rumours, stating Zwane, who signed a three-year deal ahead of the season, will remain the head coach of the club, and his position is not even up for debate “at this stage”.

“As things stand Arthur Zwane remains coach of Kaizer Chiefs. We’re not even at this stage contemplating changing,” he told Thabiso Mosia on Radio2000.

“There is a lot of investment in what we’re trying to do, and part of that investment is on coach Arthur Zwane himself.

“Also, just to mention that coach Arthur Zwane is not isolated in this discussion, we as a club we are one in this matter, we talk with one voice.

“We’re not here to protect the coach, the coach is doing his job, he’s contracted to the club and he was appointed for a particular reason.

“In no time, the supporters will see exactly what we’re intend to do. I can confirm as well as they very soon we’ll be back to the glory days.”

Maphosa also confirmed that all changes relating to player contracts and new signings will be communicated in due course after the club has finalised their reviews of the 2022/23 campaign.

“All matters relating to contracts and player movements will be articulated in media statements when we give the total review of the season in the coming week or so,” he added.

“We are not acting out of emotions at the moment. We are acting on technical aspects of the game that will be reviewed.

“We are not going to address rumours, we’re going to address the technical report of the technical team.

“We also take all this information that we pick from the social media, we compile and we put it into a report regularly to the management. Everything that is being said is getting to the ears of management.

“We hope that with time we’ll be able to get back to winning ways and get back to consistency that the supporters want to see.”

Chiefs have one more game, a clash with fifth-placed Cape Town City, who could overtake them on the log with a win. The match kick off at 15:00 on Saturday at FNB Stadium.
