Chiefs Return To Training, Khune Spotted

Kaizer Chiefs returned to training on Thursday after taking a break due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Itumeleng Khune spotted among the players back on the pitch.

The Amakhosi have been out off action since the Carling Black Label Cup on 12 November, where Arthur Zwane’s men finished in third place after losing the semi-final to Orlando Pirates on penalties before beating AmaZulu in a shootout for third spot.

However, with DStv Premiership football returning on 30 December, Chiefs are among the Premier Soccer League teams who have restarted training.

Chiefs’ social account showed a brief spell of the warm-up, with Khune, who was injured ahead of the break, among the players back on the pitch.

The 35-year-old had regained his No.1 after a fine performance against Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 quarter-final, where he saved two penalties in his side’s 5-4 shootout win, but picked up an injury in the league match against the Winelands side.

He missed the following four games – although initially returning to the line-up for the fixture against TS Galaxy, before dropping out of the XI just before kick-off – and was absent from Chiefs’ Carling Black Label Cup squad.

However, at this stage there are no further updates whether the goalkeeper will be back between the goal posts when Amakhosi travel to Golden Arrows on 31 December.

This publication understands Chiefs will not travel for any training camps and no official friendly matches have been set up as yet, while internal practice games will take place.

Chiefs are currently sitting in fourth place on the log, collecting 21 points from 13 games, which is seven less than leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a game in hand.
