Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has backed head coach Arthur Zwane and his technical team after sections of supporters called for his exit on Sunday.
Zwane admitted the fans are well within their rights to chant for his head after a disappointing eighth defeat of the season after losing 3-2 against Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
It proved a gloomy result going into the Soweto Derby with fans growing more disgruntled as they failed to close the gap on second-placed SuperSport United in the CAF Champions League qualification spot.
“From the board of directors to our Chairman, we’re fully behind the coach and it’s our job to provide the right infrastructure and support as we can,” Motaung Jr said when asked what he thought about the fans chants.
“The thing is, it’s a tricky one too because we’re facing Pirates, for example, a Pirates have this perceived amazing run, but who are three points ahead of us, we’ve drawn the same amount of games and they’ve won one more than us.
“We’ve scored one more goal, so it’s fine margins, and fine margins also in perception, we have a team above us who hasn’t won a game in the past seven, but they sitting number [four], so at the moment in time the most important thing is a lot of calmness and support.”
Motaung Jr. admitted the results have not been ideal but the perception of the situation can so quickly change with a string of positive results and they require everyone to rally around the team ahead of facing their fierce rivals this weekend, and beyond the derby.
“That’s really important for the technical staff and players because at the end of the day, emotions and perception can be misleading, we need to make sure everyone is as objective as possible and we just ask that we can all support the technical staff and support the players because our situation can be changed in a game or two.
“It also can’t [change] but it’s literally about what we do to move forward and we want to really focus on moving forward and rectifying the situation.”
Amakhosi take on the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon at 15h30 at the FNB Stadium.
