Kaizer Chiefs moved up to second in the DStv Premiership as they scored in stoppage time to beat Baroka 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.
Baroka 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs
Chiefs had a chance in the opening minute, but Erick Mathoho was unable to get his header goalward. Two minutes later Oscarine Masuluke saved Khama Billiat’s effort from the edge of the area.
The Zimbabwean had another chance in the eighth minute, but Billiat was off target this time. Keagan Dolly went just wide three minutes later as Chiefs piled on the pressure. Phathushedze Nange’s effort a minute later was touched by Masuluke.
Ntiyoso Bombi shot over in the 27th minute as Baroka had a rare chance. Moments later, at the other end, Masuluke did well to deny Reeve Frosler at close range. Nange had a good chance but shot over in the 34th minute, and it was the same result again two minutes later, this time from a lot further out.
Disaster struck as the floodlights went out in the 37th minute, bringing the game to an abrupt halt. Fortunately, power was restored two minutes later, and the game resumed immediately.
Bombi got another chance for Baroka, but his shot in the 42nd minute was straight at Brandon Petersen, and at halftime, it remained goalless.
Dolly’s effort in the 53rd minute was saved by Masuluke, while a minute later Denwin Farmer made an important clearance to deny Billiat a chance to score with the Baroka goalkeeper in no man’s land.
Baroka went close to opening the scoring in the 63rd minute when Evidence Makgopa’s header from substitute Richard Mbulu’s free-kick struck the upright. Mbulu had a great chance in the 70th minute, as he found himself unmarked in the box, but his header went wide of goal.
Chiefs thought they had a penalty in the 85th minute, but play was waved on, as Baroka continued to frustrate the Amakhosi attack.
There was a late goalbox flurry from Chiefs in the 90th minute, but they were unable to get a shot off, while Mbulu had a chance in a minute later to steal it for Baroka but shot over.
Dolly had a late chance in stoppage time, as he was played in by Leonardo Castro, but Masuluke saved his effort, with the goalmouth beckoning.
And just when it looked like it would end in a draw, Billiat grabbed the winner in stoppage time, scoring at the far post, giving Masuluke no chance.
Chiefs go to second, above Orlando Pirates, but remain 16 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Baroka remain last.
Chippa United 2-3 Marumo Gallants
Marumo Gallants grabbed a last-minute winner to beat Chippa United 3-2 at the Sisa Dukashe stadium in the DStv Premiership on Saturday afternoon. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondo and Bienvenu Eva Nga both scored braces, with Joseph Molangoane grabbing the winner.
Gallants went close in the 22nd minute, but Mpho Mvelase’s header struck the upright and bounced clear. But they were in the lead in the 30th minute, when Ndabayithethwa Ndlondo broke free, and applied the finishing touch to beat Lloydt Kazapua, 1-0 Gallants.
Bienvenu Eva Nga made it 1-1 in the 37th minute, as the home team had a quick counter-attack and found themselves with a numerical advantage, Maloisane setting up Eva Nga for the finish.
Chippa were in front ten minutes into the second half, when Eva Nga scored his second goal, heading in Siphelele Luthuli’s cross.
Gallants were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute for a handball in the box, and Ndlondo made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-2.
And just when it looked to be heading to a draw, Joseph Molangoane grabbed the winner in the 90th minute, with a simple tap-in scoring from close range.
Gallants remain eleventh, while Chippa drop to 15th.
Sekhukhune United 0-1 Swallows
Swallows picked up a much needed three points as they beat Sekukhune United 1-0.
It was goalless first half at Ellis Park Stadium, as both teams cancelled each other out in the opening 45.
However Swallows were in the lead in the 49th minute, Mwape Musonda getting the ball in the back of the net, toe picking it in despite Toaster Nsabata getting a hand on the ball.
A minute later they almost it two, but Nsabata pulled off a good save to deny Khethokhuthula Ndlovu.
Tshediso Patjie went close just after the hour mark, but his shot was narrowly over the goal, while Evans Rusike shot over in the 70th minute.
Yusuf Maart’s long-range attempt in the 78th minute needed a good save from Thela Thela to keep it out.
Ruzaigh Gamildien had a chance a minute later at the other end, but Nsabata was up to the save.
Despite late pressure, with Thela making a save in stoppage time from a deflected effort from Rodrick Kabwe, Dylan Kerr’s men were able to hold on for the win.
Swallows jump to thirteenth with the victory, while Sekhukhune are sixth.
