Chiefs’ expected 11 vs Durban City?

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs are in search of their fifth win in the Betway Premiership against Gavin Hunt’s Durban City.

The game is kicking off this evening at 19:30 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Below is the expected starting 11 that Amakhosi co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef will set.

This clash follows after what was probably Kaizer Chiefs’ most enterprising performance and result of the season so far. We are talking about the 3-1 win over DR Congo’s AS Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup second round.

All three goals came in the first half:

  • Etiosa Ighodaro (3 min)
  • Zitha Kwinika (14 min)
  • Glody Lilepo (26 min)

The goal that stood out, not just for its quality but also for its rarity, was Kwinika’s. His first goal since September 11, 2022, in the 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

DURBAN CITY IN THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP

This evening is a different level of ball game. The Betway Premiership is rated as the third-best in Africa and Durban City are fifth on it, one point and position below Kaizer Chiefs.

The Citizens have collected four wins, three draws and three defeats in 10 games, while Amakhosi have four wins, four draws and a defeat in nine.

Looking at last weekend’s starting team for the Glamour Boys, one change can be expected. The 22-year-old Velebayi, put his hand up to start this evening. With more experience than Mfundo Vilakazi, and a more direct style, the former Cape Town Spurs winger will slot in at right wing while Vilakazi will be introduced as an impact player later in the game.

Glody Lilepo is facing a late fitness test after limping off against Simba at Dobsonville. In his place Pule Mmodi will get the nod.

KAIZER CHIEFS’ EXPECTED STARTING LINE-UP

  • Goalkeeper: Brandon Petersen
  • Right back: Dillan Solomons
  • Central defender: Zitha Kwinika
  • Central defender: Fabian McCarthy
  • Left back: Bradley Cross
  • Defensive midfielder: Sibongiseni Mthethwa
  • Central midfielder: Nkosingiphile Ngcobo
  • Right winger: Asanele Velebayi
  • Left winger: Pule Mmodi
  • Attacking midfielder: Mduduzi Shabalala
  • Striker: Etiosa Ighodaro.
