Chiefs Complete Nedbank Cup Last-Eight With Scrappy Win Over Casric

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the quarter-final of the Nedbank Cup with a scrappy 2-1 win over Casric at the FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

With seven teams booked into the last eight, all eyes were on Chiefs and the high-flying Motsepe Foundation Championship side who’ve earned widespread plaudits this season.

Chiefs proved the more threatening in the early stages in front of their home fans and eventually won a penalty after ten minutes – which Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana slotted home for his eighth goal of the season across all competitions.

However, the opening goal didn’t improve the confidence of Amakhosi who played direct for the better part of the next 35 minutes which resulted in waves of turned-over possession and a stop-start nature with fouls and balls going out of play.

The home fans were clearly rising with discontent as the cheers from the stands began to diminish and in the second half, they were stunned when Kgomotso Mosadi smashed an effort past Brandon Petersen to level matters.

But barely a minute later, second-half substitute Ashley du Preez restored the advantage, slotting home Keagan Dolly’s pass.

The game remained at 2-1 as Arthur Zwane’s side saw out the game comfortably – but he may be concerned in the manner that the victory came.

Chiefs joined, Stellenbosch, Royal AM, Mamelodi Sundowns, Dondol Stars, Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United and Chippa United as the last eight teams in the competition.
