Chiefs Case Escalated To High Court

The case between the Premier Soccer League and Kaizer Chiefs over the two league matches Amakhosi failed to honour in December has been escalated to the High Court.

Chiefs won an arbitration hearing after SAFA arbitrator Nazeer Cassim had ruled in the club’s favour on 18 March, ruling a replay of the two December fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.

However, the PSL Executive has taken the decision by the arbitrator on review to the high court, according to TimesLIVE, who state that papers have been issued to the parties at the South Gauteng High Court.

So far, though, no court date has been set which should be a worry for the PSL, with the DStv Premiership set to finish in six weeks and the outcome of the case potentially having huge permutations on the log.

The PSL did not announce their decision publicly but Chiefs released a statement on 23 March, stating they are “shocked and bewildered” the league decided to take the matter to the High Court.

The Glamour Boys maintain they were not able to field a team for their two fixtures against City and Arrows after a severe Covid-19 outbreak at Naturena and requested the PSL to postpone their December fixtures.

The PSL did reject Chiefs’ application of postponement because league rules state Covid-19 cannot be used to postpone matches, which caused the Soweto giants to take the decision to the arbitration. 

Stuart Baxter’s men currently sit in third place on the log with 39 points but could overtake Royal AM in second spot, should they win their two fixtures in question. On the other hand, a walkover for City and Arrows would see the Citizens overtake Amakhosi on the log.
