Kaizer Chiefs right-back Reeve Frosler says they have no issues to see Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana stepping up to slot penalties as long he feels comfortable in doing so.
Bimenyimana scored a hat-trick of penalties when Chiefs beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 last weekend, to take his league tally to six goals.
The Burundian international became the first player in the PSL history to score three penalties, as Amakhosi moved fourth on the log table with 17 points after 10 matches.
With Chippa United coming up at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (17:30), their alternative venue this season, the Soweto giants are on the brink of becoming the first side to win four league matches on the bounce, a stark contrast to where they were at the beginning of this month.
And Frosler has backed the club’s new star striker to continue his fine record, should they get another penalty.
“I don’t think there’s any striker who doesn’t want to score goals,” said Frosler of Bimenyimana at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.
“If there’s a chance for him to score goals – be it from 12 yards out or 15 meters out, I think he wants that goal, we are fine.
“As long as he trusts himself and has confidence, who are we to tell him no. He is confident now – we just have to continue to stand behind him and make sure he scores those goals.”
Of the six goals Bimenyima has scored, four of them have come from the penalty spots, after he also slotted another in the win over SuperSport United on 17 September – on that day, he scored the brace.
On Sunday, Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung will be turning 78 and Chiefs players will want to give their chairman a birthday gift in advance. Born in Orlando East, Soweto to parents Ceyland and Mapontso Motaung in 1944, Motaung formed the club in 1970. He shone on the world stage as a footballer and administratively.
He has dedicated more than 60 years of his life to football and has not slowed down since he started playing professional football at the age of 16 and then moving to America at the age of 23 where he made his mark until 1975.
When asked whether Can Chiefs go beyond the chairman’s celebration on Sunday and maintain their form to bring the league title at Naturena for the first time since 2015, Edmilson Dove, who was sitting next to Frosler, said the title is not won in October.
“You can never decide the league after two or three games,” he said.
“The league will only end in May. We will only know who will win the league in May. As the saying goes, we are taking one game at the time and we’ll do the maths when that time comes.”
