Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina, a 23-year-old former contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, allegedly tried to take her own life after pulling out of the competition.
News of her suicide attempt spread on social media on Monday afternoon.
According to a blog called IGBO History & Facts, “Chidimma Onwe Adetshina reportedly made a desperate attempt to end her life because of bullying both online and in person about her participation in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant”.
Chidimma, who was born in South Africa to Nigerian parents, faced bullying and pressure to leave the pageant due to her background.
She withdrew from the pageant two days before the event after the Patriotic Alliance filed court papers to stop her from competing.
The Department of Home Affairs announced that their investigation into Chidimma’s citizenship found possible fraud, with her mother suspected of stealing someone’s identity.
Despite pulling out of the pageant, Chidimma congratulated Mia Le Roux, the newly crowned Miss South Africa 2024, and the other participants.
