Chicken lasagne: The creamy and cheesy meal you need today

Pasta is and always will be the ultimate comfort food, isn’t it? One of the greatest pasta inventions is lasagne, layering cheese, pasta and meat into the ultimate bite. This chicken lasagne recipe with mornay sauce is going to become the new family favourite. This recipe includes an appetising Mornay sauce adding velvet creaminess to the dish.

Chicken lasagne suggestions

A Mornay sauce is basically a béchamel sauce with cheese. You can try some variations of the Mornay sauce by experimenting with different combinations of gruyère, Emmental cheese, white cheddar or even parmesan cheese. It’s all about the layers in this tasty recipe and if you want some beautiful layers for photos to show off to your friends, let the lasagne rest for at least 20 minutes before serving. Serve your lasagne alongside a fresh green salad.

Ingredients

  • Chicken lasagne
  • 250 g 250 chicken strips

  • 1 1 onion, chopped

  • 10 ml 10 dried herbs

  • 10 ml 10 olive oil

  • 5 ml 5 salt and pepper

  • 500 g 500 lasagne sheets

  • 2 cloves 2 garlic, crushed

  • Mornay sauce
  • 100 ml 100 milk

  • 4 sticks 4 thyme

  • 50 ml 50 cream

  • 5 ml 5 salt and pepper

  • 20 g 20 flour

  • 30 g 30 cheddar cheese

  • 20 g 20 butter and margarine

Method

  • Chicken
  • Heat the olive oil in a frying pan.
  • Fry the chicken strips for about 5 minutes and set aside.
  • Fry the onion until soft but not brown.
  • Return the chicken strips to the pan, add the herbs and garlic, fry for a few minutes.
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper and simmer gently.
  • Mornay sauce
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the flour to form a roux, cook for a minute and then pour in half the milk. Try to avoid lumps.
  • Place the milk, cream and thyme and bring to simmer.
  • Allow infusing for 10 minutes.
  • Cook and whisk all the time until thick and creamy.
  • Add the cheese, and the seasoning, remove from the heat
  • Lasagne
  • In an ovenproof dish place the chicken strips.
  • Cover with sheets of lasagne and a layer of Mornay sauce.
  • Continue to layer up until the dish is full, ending with a layer of Mornay sauce.
  • Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over, and bake at 180°C for 30 minutes until lightly browned and serve.
