Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government.
Abramovich faces a prohibition on transactions with UK individuals and businesses, a travel ban and transport sanctions.
In simple words, the 55-year-old club owner’s UK assets have been frozen and the Blues’ sale has been put on hold.
According to reports, this comes after Abramovich is alleged to have a strong relationship with the Russian president Vladimir Putin, which he has denied.
However, the government has published a license that authorises a number of football-related activities to continue at Chelsea.
“There can be no safe havens for those who have supported the invasion,” said Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“Today’s sanctions are the latest step in the UK’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people. We will be ruthless in pursuing those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals and illegal occupation of sovereign allies.
“The government had come under pressure to sanction Mr Abramovich, who said he had made the difficult decision to sell Chelsea FC earlier this month.”
