Manchester City began yet another Premier League title defending season with all three points as Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic got them over the line at Stamford Bridge.
On his 100th appearance for the club, City’s talisman Haaland broke Chelsea hearts inside just 18 minutes.
The Norwegian latched on to a Bernardo Silva ball before getting past Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella to make it 1-0.
Nicolas Jackson thought he had equalised for the hosts before the break, but it was not to be as the flag went up for offside.
Despite looking sharper heading into the second half, Enzo Maresca’s side could not quite deliver the final blow.
Debutant Pedro Neto impressed, but Kovacic made the Blues miss their old boy more as he fired home the second with six minutes to play.
The Citizens have now won 10 consecutive league games, scoring at least twice in each of those wins.
They have also won their opening Premier League game of the season in 13 of the last 14 campaigns, while Chelsea have now lost their opening game for the third time in eight years.
Gameweek one concludes as Leicester City host Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night football before the next round of fixtures begins with Brighton up against Manchester United at lunchtime next Saturday.
