Certain roads closed due to flooding in Johannesburg

Heavy rains in Johannesburg on Monday caused flooding and road closures, including Pretoria Main Road and Watt Avenue in Wynberg.
The JMPD warned motorists to avoid flooded areas and use alternative routes for safety.
Officers are on-site managing traffic, and roads will reopen once water levels subside.

Gauteng residents woke up to heavy summer rains on Monday morning following a weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for adverse conditions that could lead to localised flooding.

The downpours have already caused flooding in parts of Johannesburg, forcing authorities to close certain roads. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed an urgent road closure in Wynberg, Region E, due to severe flooding.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said Pretoria Main Road at the corner of Watt Avenue is among the affected routes and has been closed to traffic.

“The flooding is significant, particularly impacting the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) lane, making the road unsafe for passage,” he said.

Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes and to avoid attempting to drive through flooded areas. JMPD officers have been deployed to assist with traffic management and guide road users safely.

Authorities have urged residents and motorists to remain patient and cooperate with officials on the ground. Updates will be provided once water levels recede and roads are deemed safe for reopening.
