Cassper Nyovest says AKA’s ‘Sim Dope’ sounds like a copy of ‘Tito Mboweni’

Cassper Nyovest has stirred up conversation after making a surprising claim about the late rapper AKA’s classic track Sim Dope.

During an interview on L-Tido’s Podcast, the Doc Shebeleza hitmaker said he believes Sim Dope was inspired by his own 2017 hit, Tito Mboweni.

Cassper, popularly known as Mufasa, made the remark casually but admitted he would have preferred AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes to respond if he was still alive.

Cassper added that both the beat and the concept of the song were “quite similar.”

Nyovest also revealed that he was once on the verge of signing to Kiernan’s record label, Benza, before choosing a different path in his career.

Following the viral clip of the interview, Raphael Benza, CEO of Vth Season and former manager of AKA, stepped in to set the record straight.

Sharing the snippet online, he respectfully dismissed Cassper’s claim while praising both rappers for their contributions to South African hip-hop.

“Okay, I will correct you. You are wrong. The only thing I can confirm is that you were almost signed by Benza,” he wrote. “You guys are two different types of artists. South Africa did best by having you two around at the same damn time. We all benefited. I don’t think that era will ever happen again in the South African music industry, but God knows we need it again. #RIPAKA. Keep your movement moving.”
