The case against 21 illegal miners arrested in a takedown operation in Stilfontein in the North West, earlier this week, has been postponed to Tuesday, 18 October 2022.
The accused made their first appearance in the Stilfontein Magistrates Court facing several charges on Wednesday.
Some of the charges included the illegal possession of firearms, possession of ammunition, explosives and precious metals as well as trespassing.
Magistrate Lizelle Kok said the matter would be heard on 18 October to allow immigration officials to verify the status of the foreign nationals.
She said all the 21 illegal miners were to remain in custody until their next appearance.
QUIET RETURNS TO STILFONTEIN
Quiet returned to Stilfontein after the case against the 21 illegal miners drew considerable reaction from the local community.
Immigration officials have yet to verify the status of the fifteen foreign nationals who appeared in court.
Five South Africans were also among the suspects who have been charged with possession of illegal firearms, ammunition, explosives, and precious metals, as well as trespassing.
Their physical addresses have also not been verified yet.
The suspects were escorted by at least 10 heavily armed officers inside the small courtroom, while a handful of officers were also standing guard outside the courthouse.
Police vans transporting the accused from the courthouse were met with loud cheers from community members who had gathered outside to show their support.
