Cartrack SA CEO Joshua Victor says the company wants the facts established after employee Gcina Dhladhla died at its Rosebank offices.
Dhladhla, 29, died inside a toilet cubicle at the company’s offices on Saturday.
Her death has sparked public anger and calls for accountability.
In a joint statement released with Dhladhla’s family on Thursday, Cartrack said both parties were committed to establishing what happened through ongoing investigations.
Victor said Dhladhla was a valued colleague and that her death had been deeply felt across the organisation.
“Our colleague was a valued member of our team and this loss has been deeply felt across the organisation,” he said.
Family and company meet
The family and Cartrack representatives met on Thursday to discuss the tragedy and the way forward.
According to the joint statement, the meeting was emotional and constructive.
It allowed questions to be asked and information to be shared.
Family representative Thamsanqa Mbuli thanked Cartrack management for what he described as an open and transparent first discussion.
“Our intended objective of clarifying the sequence of events leading up to our beloved daughter, sister and colleague passing was achieved,” he said.
Dhladhla’s sister, Lindiwe Dhladhla, said the meeting had brought her some peace.
Protesters demand answers
The meeting came after the ANCYL in Gauteng led a protest outside Cartrack’s Rosebank offices on Thursday.
Protesters demanded answers over the circumstances surrounding Dhladhla’s death and accused the company of misrepresenting what happened.
There were also claims that employees were prevented from leaving the building while the picket was underway.
A message allegedly sent by an employee inside the office said: “We are locked inside, unable to go out.”
Cartrack released the joint statement after the protest.
Investigations continue
Victor said Cartrack would cooperate with law enforcement and the Department of Labour.
“We remain deeply committed to supporting the family, cooperating fully with law enforcement and the Department of Labour, and ensuring that every fact is uncovered and established through the appropriate processes,” he said.
Mbuli urged the public not to pre-empt the outcome of investigations.
He said Cartrack employees should not be treated as enemies.
Dhladhla is expected to be buried on Saturday, 13 June.
Her family has invited colleagues, managers and co-workers to attend the funeral.
