South Africa’s tour of the West Indies begun with a no-result in Trinidad with less than 300 overs bowled across the five days of play.

On day five, it seemed as though the Proteas may find a win out of nowhere as Tony de Zorzi (45) and Tristan Stubbs (68) scored fast to get them to a second innings score of 173/3 in just 29 overs to prompt a quick declaration.

After making 357 in their first innings, South Africa bowled the Windies out for 233 and left them a target of 298 in the finale.

With just over two sessions to go, it seemed the visitors could just well get their hosts all out. But up stepped Alick Athanaze, who scored a phenomenal 92 off just 116 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Keshav Maharaj looked sharp for his 4/88; and with the match ending on a score of 201/5, you get the feeling that one more session could well have rendered a result, one way or the other.

Ultimately, it was not to be, with the spoils shared ahead of the the second and final test which gets underway on Thursday before the tour concludes with three T20 internationals.
