Cardoso hails collective effort after Coach of the Season award

“Winning this award is obviously an individual recognition of a coach but I see it in a wider perspective,” Cardoso said.

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has hailed the club’s collective effort following his recognition as the PSL Coach of the Season.

Cardoso won the award during the League’s awards ceremony on Tuesday evening.

He expressed a heartfelt gratitude to his players, technical team, club management, and family.

The Portuguese coach replaced Manqoba Mngqithi at the helm last December and wasted no time in stamping his authority.

In 21 Betway Premiership matches, Cardoso led the Brazilians to 18 wins, one draw, and just two defeats to secure the league title in emphatic fashion.

His consistency throughout the campaign saw him collect three Coach of the Month awards, as Sundowns remained dominant on their march to domestic glory.

Cardoso’s remarkable turnaround at Chloorkop saw him edge out strong competition from former Orlando Pirates boss José Riveiro and Stellenbosch FC’s Steve Barker for the prestigious accolade.

“Winning this award is obviously an individual recognition of a coach but I see it in a wider perspective,” Cardoso told the Sundowns media team.

“It reflects the work of a big group of people alongside the coaching staff and the players who basically allow any coach to be successful and fulfil the expectations of their careers.”

Despite the personal honour, the Sundowns mentor reserved special praise to his players who overcame an unconvincing start to season to defend their title. They showed resilience in fending off an early title challenge from the Buccaneers who eventually finished second.

“Mostly, I dedicate this trophy to the players, but it also means that there is the staff of the club who also allow the Coach and the players to perform,” he concluded.

“I see this award belonging to a big group of people despite me being the face of it. It’s also an honour which makes the club believe that they made a good choice on the coach.

“So I’m happy and I dedicate it to the management of the club. Last but not least, I dedicate it to my family because they supported me throughout the years and they believe in me a lot. Winning this trophy is also a moment that we’re all together to celebrate me and my career.”

With one trophy already in the bag, Cardoso will now look to steer the Tshwane giants towards an unprecedented ninth consecutive league title in the new season.
