Cape Town’s Kloof Road Set to Reopen After Three Years

Cape Town’s Kloof Road is expected to reopen to traffic by mid-December 2026, more than three years after severe storm damage forced its closure.

According to Cape Town Etc, the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has entered the final stage of rehabilitation, with most of the major structural repairs now completed.

The reopening will restore an important route connecting the City Bowl to Atlantic Seaboard suburbs, including Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay and Sea Point.

Why was Kloof Road closed?

Kloof Road has been closed since September 2023 after a Level-9 storm caused significant damage to the embankment supporting the road.

The affected section between Kloof Nek Road and Round House Road was declared unsafe for traffic following the storm.

Further damage occurred during the winter of 2024 when heavy rainfall triggered another slope failure, adding to the rehabilitation work required.

Repairs enter final stage

The City has confirmed that contractors have completed most of the work needed to stabilise the damaged slopes.

Repairs included installing soil nails and constructing gabion walls to reinforce the embankments and support the road above.

New stormwater infrastructure has also been installed, alongside upgraded culverts and rehabilitated drainage channels designed to manage rainwater and reduce erosion.

Contractors will now focus on completing the remaining roadworks before reopening the route.

Environmental protection during construction

Because Kloof Road falls within Table Mountain National Park, the rehabilitation project has also included measures to protect indigenous vegetation.

Earlier in 2026, teams collected indigenous plant species and cuttings from the affected area.

These were maintained at a nursery while construction continued, with replanting now underway on the reconstructed slopes.

When will Kloof Road reopen?

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, confirmed the progress following a site inspection with Ward Councillor Nicola Jowell.

The City is targeting mid-December 2026 for reopening, provided the remaining work proceeds as planned.

However, Quintas clarified that the project only covers repairs to damaged infrastructure.

This means additional improvements, including dedicated walking and cycling lanes, will not form part of the rehabilitation.

Kloof Road will remain closed until the outstanding work is completed and the route is ready to reopen safely.

The reopening date remains a target rather than a confirmed date.
