A horrific incident in Mitchells Plain has left the community reeling after a 44-year-old woman was bitten to death by pitbulls at her home.

Western Cape police say officers arrived at the scene to find that the woman had already been taken to hospital by private transport.

Bystanders told police that she had been attacked in her backyard by two dogs, including at least one pitbull.

Neighbours reportedly tried to pull the dogs off the victim but were unsuccessful. She later succumbed to her injuries in hospital earlier this month.

Police spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirmed that one of the dogs was a pitbull and that both animals were humanely euthanised on the day of the incident.

The dogs reportedly belonged to the victim’s son, who handed them over to authorities following the attack.
