Cape Town-born forward Andras Nemeth has joined Bundesliga giants Hamburger SV, who currently play in Germany’s second tier Bundesliga 2.

Nemeth, 20, was born in Cape Town to a Hungarian father and a South African mother.

The 1.87 metre tall centre-forward made his footballing beginnings in his father’s homeland with Hungarian club Vasas SC (2010-15), before continuing his career at youth level in Belgium with Sporting Hasselt (2016) and KRC Genk (2016-20).

On Friday, he was announced by HSV – one of the oldest Bundesliga clubs, who have fallen into Bundesliga 2 and are desperate for promotion back into the German top flight. They currently occupy second spot in Bundesliga 2, which would qualify for direct promotion.

Nemeth signed contract until 2026 after joining from Belgian first division KRC Genk and will wear the No. 20 shirt for HSV.

“Andras is a modern centre-forward who stands out not only for his finishing quality but also for his understanding of the game,” said HSV Sports Director Jonas Boldt about the talented striker.

“We already looked into him in the summer and see him as a player who has multi-layered development potential.

“During the talks, it was impressive to see how intensively he had engaged with HSV and our idea of the game.”

Nemeth himself expressed his excitement to join the Bundesliga “dinos”: “I like the way HSV plays – with up-and-coming players and dominant offensive football.

“That, together with the good conversations I had with the coach, absolutely convinced me. I want to be a part of it and I can’t wait to meet the fans in this incredible stadium.”

Nemeth progressed through Hungary’s youth national teams since 2017 and finally made his senior debut in November last year, scoring his first goal for the national side in a 2-2 draw with Luxembourg.

He is yet to represent Hungary in an official FIFA match, which means he would still be eligible to play for South Africa but it is understood that SAFA never really made an attempt to have him wear the Bafana Bafana shirt.

During his time at KRC Genk, Nemeth has scored three goals in 21 appearances, featuring in 15 games (one goal, two assists) for the current leaders of the Jupiler Pro League in 2022/23.
