Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila, whose appointment still divides football fans, says he should be given credit for what he has achieved so far.
Mammila was asked by iDiski Times whether he can last the whole season at the club to avoid the struggle they endured last term, but it doesn’t happen very often as a trigger-happy chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi doesn’t waste time to pull the trigger when results are not coming his way.
Mammila knows fully well on how Mpengensi operates, as he was appointed in September last year and was sacked in February before joining Moroka Swallows as Technical Advisor.
He re-joined Chippa during the pre-season and his side started the campaign with two goalless draws against Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy.
“Maybe you guys need to get calculators because you come here and [are] not having calculations,” stated Mammila.
“If I ask you, last season, how many points did I collect? How many? I collected 19 from 14 games and it did not stop there.
“I went to Swallows [as technical advisor and sat alongside caretaker coach Musa Nyatama], that team never won two games in a row before I went to Swallows the entire season.
“How many did I help to obtain there? Four games [we won] and how many points is that? 12 and plus one against Mamelodi Sundowns, do the calculations. How many? 13.
“13 plus 19? 32 points. Let’s calculate the matches, 14 matches plus six, how many? 20 and that gives you 32 points. Other coaches haven’t done that.
“Sometimes give credit where it is due, guys. Don’t look at this [pointing to his skin], don’t look at this, look at the job there.
“The team is playing. It’s not miracles that just happen – it’s hard work. Judge me on performance, not on other things. Judge me on performance, just like other people.”
The Chilli Boys now have the weekend off, due the MTN8 quarter-finals, and will return to action on 15 August when they will face Orlando Pirates, while just four days later they will meet Mamelodi Sundowns.
