Mzansi’s rich musical heritage will take centre stage as the Caiphus Semenya Songbook comes to Joburg Theatre from 18 to 20 September 2026.

As reported by Daily Sun, the three-day production will celebrate the remarkable career of Caiphus Semenya, one of South Africa’s influential composers, arrangers and musicians.
Born in Alexandra, Johannesburg, in 1939, Semenya’s career has stretched across continents and generations.
From Mzansi to the world
Semenya’s contribution to music extends well beyond South Africa. During his years in exile, he worked with artists including Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Harry Belafonte, while developing a significant international career in Los Angeles.
His collaboration with Quincy Jones led to work on the music for the acclaimed Roots miniseries and The Color Purple, while his broader career has included arranging and composing across jazz, African music and popular music.

A new generation discovers the songbook
According to SA Music News, the Joburg Theatre production aims to bring that extensive body of work to contemporary audiences. Directed by James Ngcobo, with Tshepo Mngoma as musical director, the show will combine familiar compositions with fresh interpretations from today’s performers.
Rather than simply looking back, the production offers an opportunity to consider why Semenya’s music continues to resonate. His repertoire reflects themes of identity, love, resilience, home and the South African experience.
For music lovers, the Caiphus Semenya Songbook promises an evening of nostalgia, discovery and cultural pride — while giving a new generation a chance to experience the work of a musician whose influence has reached far beyond South Africa.
