The Confederation of African Football have updated their annual club ranking of the best football clubs on the continent, with Orlando Pirates overtaking Kaizer Chiefs.

The ranking is based on how clubs have performed in the CAF-inter club competitions, namely the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup over the last five seasons.

As a consequence, it doesn’t surprise much that Al Ahly sit at the top of the ranking, after reaching four of the last five CAFCL final and winning the trophy twice

This year’s CAFCL winners, who have been in the final thrice since 2017, have climbed into second spot on the list, while Esperance de Tunis complete the top three.

The highest ranked South African team are Mamelodi Sundowns after reaching three successive quarter-finals and the semi-finals in in 2018/19.

Meanwhile, both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are sitting outside the top 10, but the Buccaneers climbed into 11th spot, following their run to the CAF Confederation Cup final this season.

Chiefs, meanwhile, who had benefited from their runners-up finish in last season’s CAFCL final, dropped to 18th spot after not partaking in a CAF-inter club competition in 2021/22.
