Cabinet criticizes the Cape Town taxi strike

Cabinet is urging all parties participating in the taxi strike to resolve any unresolved issues and halt the violence.

Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister in Presidency, says government wants all taxi operating conditions that violate the country’s regulations to be abolished.

It is the eighth day of the strike, which has created widespread disruptions in education, healthcare, and other sectors throughout the Western Cape.

What did the Cabinet say?

“Cabinet was briefed on the ongoing impasse between Santaco Western Cape and the City of Cape Town, which has escalated into a violent strike as a result of the City of Cape Town impounding taxis,” she said.

“Cabinet condemns violence and chaos in Cape Town and has urged Santaco to conduct peaceful protests that do not infringe on the rights of others, the president called on all parties to return to the negotiating table yesterday. We are delighted to inform that no violence events have been reported in the last 48 hours nonetheless, Cabinet has requested that the SAPS and other law enforcement authorities bring the violence under control so that residents can safely travel to school and work and continue with their normal daily routines.

“The Cabinet was also briefed on the City of Cape Town imposing conditions that conflict with both the National Road Traffic Act and the National Land Transport Act, both of which regulate traffic offenses and applicable penalties, including vehicle impoundment,” said Ntshavheni.

When did Santaco and the provincial government meet?

Santaco and the provincial government had a meeting on Thursday afternoon.

The outcome of the meeting between Santaco and the provincial government was that the taxi strike is called off with immediate effect.
