Induna Sibongiseni Wilson Buthelezi from the Buthelezi clan was shot on Monday at the gate of his home in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal. He was about to leave for the local tribal court in Oncweleni village.
This occurred just three days after female induna Joyce Mokgosi was killed near Newcastle.
The killings have upset many, who argue that the government isn’t doing enough to protect traditional leaders, despite spending large amounts on politicians’ security.
Siphamandla Ntombela from the National Freedom Party said: “This is the biggest challenge that traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal face. They are seriously under attack, but they don’t have security.
“The politicians are provided with multiple security details to ensure that even their homes are safe.”
Ntombela added that Oncweleni village has no police station, forcing residents to travel 40 to 60 kilometres to reach one.
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, condemned the killing, saying: “This tragic incident marks the second killing of an induna in the province within the last three days, highlighting a disturbing trend of violence.”
He sent condolences to the clan’s senior leader, Inkosi Zuzifa Buthelezi, and urged the police and the community to assist in apprehending the killers.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police are investigating the murders but have not made any arrests yet.
