Members of the Zulu royal family are angry with Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister to the Zulu king, for appointing members who oppose King Misuzulu kaZwelithini to a key committee.
This committee is meant to resolve disputes over traditional leadership in KwaZulu-Natal.
The problem started when Buthelezi, the KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, announced on Thursday that he had chosen people to be part of this important committee who had previously fought against King Misuzulu’s rule and even taken legal action against him.
In WhatsApp groups, many members of the royal family expressed shock and frustration and questioned why Buthelezi would choose people who are enemies of the king.
Some even called for Buthelezi to be removed because they no longer trust him to support the king.
Among those appointed are Prince Mbonisi kaBhekuzulu, who supports a different candidate for the throne, and other princes who want King Misuzulu replaced.
Buthelezi defended his decision, saying that these royals had worked closely with the late King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu on similar issues and that their experience would help resolve ongoing disputes.
“It is a pleasure for me to present the team that I have appointed to resolve succession disputes,” said Buthelezi.
The law in KZN gives the MEC the authority to manage traditional leadership issues in the province.
