Hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes will make history at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). MTV has named him the very first recipient of the newly created Rock The Bells Visionary Award

The award will be presented during the 2025 VMAs, recognising Busta Rhymes’ innovative and lasting impact on rap music and visuals.

BUSTA RHYMES FOR MTV

Busta Rhymes has long been known for his explosive style and creative music videos. His influence reaches far beyond South Africa and into the global hip-hop scene.

The recognition reflects his decades of groundbreaking work and his ability to stay relevant in a constantly evolving industry, according to Okay Player.

“The Rock The Bells Visionary Award honours artists who push boundaries and inspire generations,” said a spokesperson for MTV.

“Busta Rhymes exemplifies this with his dynamic sound and unforgettable visuals. It’s a well-earned accolade for one of hip-hop’s most inventive stars.”

THE VMA AWARDS

The 2025 VMAs will also spotlight other iconic artists. Mariah Carey will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award in recognition of her enduring contributions to music.

Pop superstar Ricky Martin will be honoured with the Latin Icon Award, highlighting his influence on Latin and global music.

South African fans can look forward to exciting performances by international acts, including Alex Warren, J Balvin with DJ Snake, and Sabrina Carpenter.

THE VMA NOMINATIONS

Lady Gaga leads the nominations with 12 nods, followed closely by Bruno Mars with 11. This year’s MTV VMAs also debut a Best Country category, a first for the awards.

LL COOL J will host the show, bringing his experience as a hip-hop icon who won Best Rap Video in 1991 and the Video Vanguard Award in 1997.

“Hosting the VMAs again feels like coming full circle,” said LL COOL J. “I’m honoured to celebrate these incredible artists.”

BUSTA RHYMES A HIP HOP LEGEND

Earlier this year, Busta Rhymes showcased new music on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

He performed tracks from his latest album, Dragon Season… The Awakening, including Unleash Me and Do the Busabus Pt. 2, alongside the hit “Look at Me Now” with Chris Brown.

The MTV VMAs will undoubtedly celebrate hip-hop’s global reach, resonating powerfully with those who appreciate creative innovation and musical legacy.
