The bus driver involved in a crash that killed six learners in Mpumalanga has been arrested.
He is in hospital under police guard after allegedly running away from the crash scene.
The accident happened when the bus, taking learners home from school, hit a moving train on the R104.
Over 20 learners are in hospital, with some in critical condition.
Witnesses and some learners have raised concerns about the condition of the bus and the driver’s behaviour.
There are rumours that the driver might have been drunk and ignored warnings about the approaching train.
The crash scene was chaotic, with school books, shoes, and bags scattered around as families looked for their children’s belongings.
Mpumalanga’s MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, said early information suggests the driver was reckless.
The department is now checking the safety of all buses used for school transport.
Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa visited the crash site and emphasised the government’s focus on road safety, especially for school transport.
He mentioned a policy review to improve cooperation between the Department of Transport and Basic Education to ensure learner safety.
