On the N2 northbound for Nongoma, a bus carrying 78 wedding guests collided with a concrete barrier and overturned, sending nine passengers to the hospital.
According to early reports from emergency services who responded to the scene, seven of the injured are in critical condition and two are seriously injured.
The collision occurred on the N2 near Salt Rock. Due to the seriousness of the crash, a large number of medics were dispatched to the scene.
The scene was attended by ALS Paramedics Medical Services, IPSS Medical Rescue, Taurus EMS Medics, EMRS, KDM Fire, the local road traffic infringement, and police. A triage system was quickly established, and additional ambulances and advanced life support paramedics were sent to the scene. At the hospital, all of the injured patients were stabilized.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick, advanced life paramedics worked to stabilize a critically injured passenger who was partially entrapped under the bus. They were doing this while KDM Fire used the jaws of life to extract her from the wreckage.
“The bus was travelling from Umzimkulu to Nongoma carrying 78 people when it collided with a concrete barrier used to divert traffic around the damaged Umhlali River bridge and overturned,” Meyrick said.
The accident scene has been cleared and police and traffic authorities are investigating. The events leading up to the incident are unknown at this stage.
