Bullet, dagga, alcohol confiscated in raid on schools

A bullet, a stash of dagga, anti-depression tablets and cough mixture packs are among the many dangerous items seized during a raid on two schools in the notorious township of Ntuzuma in the north of Durban today.

The Ntuzuma community forum and the Durban metro police conducted the raid on Phembisizwe High School and Mandlenkosi High School.

Andile Jali, the chairperson of the forum, said they confiscated a bullet from a learner, bottles of alcohol, mirrors and cellphones at Phembisizwe High.

“The mirrors were taken because they are used during fights. The cellphones are used to mobilise during fights and call criminals to come and rob teachers,” Jali said.

At Mandlenkosi High, the forum found one learner with dagga and mirrors, Zain anti-depression tablets and cough mixture packs.

“We were led to the woman who sells the dagga, and she was warned to stop it after she claimed that it’s adults who buy it from her and then give it to the pupils,” Jali said.

He said the learners use the tablets and cough mixture to make illegal alcohol called “incika” – a mixture of these items with soft drinks.

Jali said the raid was to counter crime ravaging schools in the area after a teacher at Phikiswayo Primary School, Dudu Khumalo, 46, was shot dead in front of learners last month.
