Buchanan’s Days Numbered At AmaZulu?

AmaZulu are toying with the idea of terminating the contract of midfielder Keagan Buchanan, iDiski Times has learnt.

However, the issue is complicated as Buchanan still has one year and six months left on his current deal with Usuthu.

Buchanan has not featured since the season resumed with Usuthu, with coach Romain Folz preferring Makhekheni Makhaula, George Maluleka and either Tercious Malepe or Rally Bwalya.

But his absence has not been in his own doing, as he suffered an injury and last time he was part of the team was against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final, only fit to be on the bench.

The 31-year-old last played for Usuthu against Stellenbosch FC in October, coming on in the second half for Augustine Kwem, who just like him, has been frozen out by Folz.

In seeing many star players frozen out, Folz said he was giving everyone a chance, just like Thabo Qalinge and Hendrick Ekstein – who were previously banished by the club at the beginning of the season.

Other players who have seen little action are Gabadinho Mhango, who is not injured, but somewhat surprisingly has been overlooked as coach Folz has preferred Junior Dion, who he signed from Marumo Gallants.

Folz was asked by iDiski Times why Kwem, Buchanan and Mhango are not featuring regularly of late, as many supporters and neutrals would consider them to be stars in the side.

“One can also say that the players on the field are quality as well,” countered Folz.

“If you have options, it is always good for a coach. I give opportunities to people. If they grab the opportunity, they stay in the team. The day they lack performance, they are dropped and someone else gets the opportunity. It is how it works.

“To be quite honest with you, I don’t look at the names or anything. I look at the individuals and what they bring into the collective aspect. I think at this moment in time, the players who are playing in those positions are doing fine.

“But I’m also sure that the players you mentioned will have an opportunity coming soon. It is a matter of grabbing it, but I’m confident they will. You have to be fair with everyone.

“If you want to write that, that’s what you should write – you should be fair with everyone.”

If Buchanan’s AmaZulu contract is terminated, it would be the second time in three seasons as Maritzburg United did so in the second half of the 2020/21 season.
