Orlando Pirates are feeling relieved after beating CS Disciples 4-0 in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round at Orlando Stadium on Friday.
The Soweto giants were in danger of an early exit after a disappointing 0-0 draw in the first leg away from home.
However, they turned things around with a strong performance in the return leg, winning comfortably at home despite starting the match under pressure.
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine admitted that the game was tough, even though the final score looked easy.
“It wasn’t an easy game; it’s always difficult in these CAF matches,” Chaine told Pirates’ media.
“Every team is strong in their own country, so you can’t take anyone lightly. They [Disciples] showed us in the first leg that they’re a serious team. So, I think it’s a good win at home.”
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro, who was under pressure after last season’s failure to reach the group stage, was happy with the clean sheets in both legs.
“We created a lot of chances, especially in the first 30 minutes,” Riveiro said.
“It was the same in the first leg, but overall, we are happy with our performance and that we didn’t allow any goals in both games. That’s a big achievement and makes things easier as we move forward.”
Pirates now wait to see if they will face Namibian champions African Stars or Jwaneng Galaxy in the next round.
Pirates might still have bad memories of Galaxy, as the Botswana team knocked them out last season before the group stage.
