  • Gauteng police are investigating an attempted murder after gunmen opened fire on businessman Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus on Monday.
  • Mogotsi, linked to corruption and political interference claims, has not reported to police despite promising to open a case by 8AM.
  • His name has surfaced at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where witnesses allege he used ANC connections to solicit money from criminal figures.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng is investigating a case of attempted murder following an attempted hit on controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus on the East Rand on Monday, 3 November 2025.

This comes after Mogotsi, who has been placed at the centre of corruption and political interference in law enforcement, had his business premises raided in the North West in October.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told Kaya News that gunmen, allegedly travelling in a white bakkie, opened fire on Mogotsi’s vehicle.

“All I can confirm is that we have gathered all physical evidence and material that was at the scene. This will assist us to solve this case and give us an idea of what really transpired.

“Our teams are working around the clock to solve this particular case, but what is important, what will assist us, is Brown Mogotsi’s statement. We are waiting for him here at the Vosloorus police station,” Mathe said.

Mogotsi reportedly told police he would be at the station by 8 AM today, Tuesday, 4 November, to open a case. However, more than two hours after his self-imposed deadline, he had yet to arrive.

Mathe said officers have tried to contact him but have been unable to reach him.

Madlanga Commission of Inquiry Controversy

Mogotsi’s name has been repeatedly mentioned at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

SAPS Crime Intelligence boss, General Dumisani Khumalo, revealed a series of WhatsApp messages showing that Mogotsi allegedly used his ties to the ANC to solicit money from alleged criminal masterminds for his personal benefit.

It was also revealed that some of the funds were allegedly used to finance activities related to the party, which has governed South Africa for nearly three decades.

Claims presented at the commission include that jailed businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala paid hundreds of thousands of rands to Mogotsi in exchange for protection and access to private SAPS documents.
