Broos Upset With Pitso, Questions SA Quality

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed that he is upset with Pitso Mosimane over comments the former Al Ahly coach made four days ahead of the clash with Morocco, and slammed the quality of the PSL.

The Belgian tactician addressed local media on Tuesday in his first press appearance after the 2-1 defeat to Morocco, when they went down to the Atlas Lions despite opening the scoring in the eighth minute thanks to Lyle Foster’s first ever goal for Bafana.

South Africa will now have to get at least four points against Liberia in a double-header in September to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations alive.

On Tuesday, Broos expressed his frustration after Mosimane had criticised him in the days building up to the Morocco match.

“At that moment, I don’t understand why you have to criticise a colleague,” Broos said during a press conference attended by Lorenz Kohler.

“I was very disappointed in him about that.”

Broos went on to discuss what he calls the ‘real problem’ of South African football, the lack of quality.

“But I think it’s time now to face the real problem. What is the real problem of South Africa? The real problem of South Africa is that we don’t have those quality players,” he continued.

“We don’t have those players like our three last opponents, Ghana, France and Morocco have. When you see those teams – Ghana, 90% of the players from Europe. France, I don’t have to explain which players are playing in the team of France, all players are in big teams in Europe.

“But also Morocco, when you look at the selection of Morocco, there was only one player of the CAF Champions League winning-team Wydad Casablanca, and it was the goalkeeper. For the rest, there was no Champions League winners, no players. I think that shows enough.

“All those players are playing in great European teams, Fiorentina, Sevilla, PSG. We don’t have those quality players who are playing in Europe. We can look at the fantastic raise of Sundowns and Pirates in Champions League and Confederation Cup but Sundowns lost the quarter-final, Pirates lost the final and who won? Moroccan teams, Wydad and Berkane.

“When I talk about quality and you see that even in Morocco there was no player of those teams in the selection, except the goalkeeper, I think it tells enough.

“Therefore again, let’s face the problem of South Africa and the problem is that the level of our PSL is not high enough. We don’t make players with high quality.”

Unfortunately, South Africa will not have another match during the current international break after the South African Football Association failed to secure another opponent.
