Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has reacted to his team’s 2-1 defeat in their 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier in Morocco and revealed what he told the officials after the match.

South Africa started the game on the front foot after Lyle Lakay scored in the eighth minute. However, Morocco took over control of the match for large parts and eventually turned the tie around in the second half thanks to goals by Youssef En-Nesyri and Ayoub El Kaabi.

“No, not at all [the result we wanted]. I think long term of the game I thought we could win, then after the goal we receive I was happy with one point, if you get a second goal so close to the end it’s disappointing,” Broos told Bafana’s media team.

“For sure we know what to do now in September. I was not how can I say it disappointed about the performance today. We will fight for it. We played against a very strong Moroccan team.

“So that was good. Let’s hope that we can do it in September twice and hopefully get two victory.”

Broos was seen chatting to the officials after the match and revealed he was asking why they only played a few minutes of injury-time.

“It was the fourth ref. They said four minutes more and they only played two minutes,” he continued.

“That’s why we were asking him ‘what’s the problem, you said four and the referee is only playing two minutes?’ But okay. he whistled the end and you can change it.”

South Africa continue their AFCON 2023 qualifiers against Liberia in September and two wins would ensure their qualification for the tournament in Ivory Coast.
